28 artworks mysteriously disappeared three decades ago. They've finally returned home to South Africa
It was a phone call that changed everything. A celebrated South African artist received good news after more than 30 years of waiting. Her lost artworks in Sweden had been found. The artist was born in 1943 and was influenced by her grandmother’s traditional painting style. She started her official art classes in 1970 and displayed her works under a tree once a month. Despite the apartheid policies, she continued to refine her craft and gained attention with her first solo exhibition. In 1991, she accepted an invitation to exhibit her paintings in Sweden, but they went missing and were believed to be stolen. Recently, the majority of her missing collection was discovered and returned to her after 32 years. The artist and her community welcomed the artworks back home, which are now on display for the public.
